Spitzenwho? Ahead of the 2019 European Parliament elections, Debating Europe is profiling the so-called Spitzenkandidaten, the candidates for EU Commission President.

According to the Spitzenkandidaten (‘lead candidates’) process, the various European political parties will nominate candidates for the role of Commission President. The party receiving the most votes in the elections will then (in theory) have its candidate confirmed. It’s a relatively new process, which was first introduced during the 2014 European Parliament elections. The idea is to create a strong link between the votes cast by citizens during the election and the position of the European Commission President (which had previously been decided in closed backroom deals).

So, who are these candidates? More than a dozen candidates have been put forward by the various political factions in the European Parliament. Debating Europe will profile each of them in turn, so check the links below to learn more about them and decide who (if any) you will support in the May elections!
