Something changed when Russian tanks rolled across the Ukrainian border. The outpouring of support and solidarity between EU Member States, and the determination from Europeans to stand with Ukraine against Putin’s aggression, was unexpected and unprecedented. Europe’s lightning-fast response introduced crippling financial sanctions against the Russian economy and sent military aid to Ukraine. This represents, for the first time, the EU acting as a true geopolitical power.

What does this mean for Europe’s future? How do European citizens feel about so many sacred political cows being sacrificed in such a short time? What will be the detailed implications of grand strategic decisions taken during the early days of the invasion, and what sort of policy implications will they have over the coming decade?

We cannot lose sight of existing challenges. We are still dealing with the impact of the pandemic. Climate change is the biggest issue facing humanity, and it will increase the sort of economic and political pressures that lead to conflict and instability in Europe’s neighbourhood. How, then, can the European Green Deal help us achieve strategic autonomy and break our reliance on imported oil and gas? How can the Green Deal support a new social contract for EU citizens, so that we can navigate the green digital transition in solidarity?

This will require a new kind of leadership. It will need citizens to be the ones in control. Only through greater deliberative and participatory democracy (with real agenda-setting and decision-making power) can we guarantee European unity and solidarity. We need to regenerate our democracy for the 21st century, meaning EU citizens need – following the example of the Conference on the Future of Europe – much bigger input into big strategic and policy decisions that will affect their lives for generations.

What do you think of Europe’s response to the Russian invasion? What will it mean for the future of the European Union? Let us know your thoughts and comments in the form below and we’ll take them to policymakers and experts for their reactions!

Putin has succeeded where many have failed…..Europe now increasing military spending….reinforcing border forces….accelerating move away from dependency on Russian oil/gas.. .clamping down on oligarchs and their illicit gains.Putin and his kleptocracy will never be trusted again….the sanctions should be enforced for as long as his illegal adventures in eastern europe continue.

We should put to trial all EU politicians who supported and armed Ukraine’s neo-nazi groups like Azov Battalion (now a “national militia”) and parties like Svoboda, which had 4 ministers after the coup. In 2012, the European Parliament said this (before they became friends 2 years later):”rising nationalistic sentiment in Ukraine, expressed in support for the Svoboda Party, which, as a result, is one of the two new parties to enter the Verkhovna Rada; recalls that racist, anti-Semitic and xenophobic views go against the EU’s fundamental values and principles and therefore appeals to pro-democratic parties in the Verkhovna Rada not to associate with, endorse or form coalitions with this party; “https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/TA-7-2012-0507_EN.html

Idiotic, the threat of ethnic cleansing was high during the 8 year civil war. Now Europe has opened the floodgates to allow any all all to go and fight. Plus flooding Ukraine with weopans. Also don’t forgot the radicalisation that is happening against ordinary Russians. All combined, a recipe disaster. Europe should have stepped up years age to stop the civil war.

It is a shame. The European Peace Project has never been even mentioned during the evolving crisis. There was only rhetoric of war – which Putin commanded with his threats. The economic sanctions are right and also in a measure which really hurts. In my eyes, Putin defeated the EU. Activating the European Peace Facility for buying wepons for EU member states is not only appalling, it is the end of the Peace Project. I don’t remember that there was a discussion about it on the level of member states and today Parliament applauded without debate. The EU now has become a military partnership which goes even further than NATO. Their members have to care for their own “defense” budgets. EU now pays from a common budget for weapons delivered into a war-faring country. Furthermore and for me a complete desaster, the neutral states had no say in this. In my opinion this decision violates Austria’s constitution. No one will make a difference between EU&NATO-states and the neutral states.Putin has defeated the European Union. Her values are being kicked overboard at the first occasion. It is a shame.

The EU is endangering EU citizens with Russian missiles. The EU are hypocrites that cherry-pick which war to support, whilst ignoring the rest. Disgusting. The EU is blatantly ignoring Putin’s legitimate reasons of keeping Ukraine free from NATO bases to protect his country. The EU are liars and deceivers who have no care about EU citizens’ health, life or wellbeing at all. They will only get away with it as long as most people are ignorant and do not read, research or think for themselves. Luckily that is changing with the next generation who are more clued up than the ones before.

Mario Kockartz Anna IvanovaThe war in Ukraine started in 2014, when Soros, Obama, Biden and Nuland orchestrated the regime change by instigating the Maidan, toppling a democratically elected president, and installing a fascist junta in his place. Since then, Ukrainian military and paramilitary forces have been killing civilians and children in Donbas, attacking and plundering churches. There is a monument of the children killed in Donbas, it’s called Alley of Angels. That comes as no surprise — Democrats have always been fond of killing or pervering children. They kill unborn babies, they killed children in Belgrade and Afghanistan, they have no remorse. Like any other sociopath, they are proud of their crimes. They even call them rights.

The EU is not taking actions for the sake of Ukraine and its people but to destroy Russia. Turkey has innovated Cyprus in 1974 and since then occupies half of the country, an EU member State. EU has done nothing against Turkey that occupies EU territory. EU has done nothing for its Cypriots citizens that became refuges in their own country due to the Turkish invasion and occupation.
EU needs to explain the world why it does not taking any measures against its close ally Turkey for the occupation of its member state Cyprus, and cares that much about a 3rd country.

    • avatar
      Denis

I understand your frustration and feel deeply with you Marios but I don’t agree at all that “” Europe wants to destroy Russia”. Maybe there is some hope for Cyprus coming also, when dictators realise: the world doesn’t want them anymore.

    EU-Reform Proactive

I am highly concerned, disappointed & condemn the unnecessary invasion of Ukraine by its Russian neighbour!

Existing challenges like e.g. the Covid-19 pandemic could have been collectively conquered by closer adherence & cooperation using medical science and avoiding wrongly interpreted human rights doctrines. Most likely could this pandemic been an epidemic only by now!

There is a similar irrationality- the Ukrainian Constitution with the Declaration of Independence dated August 24, 1991, which contains pledges of non-coalition and future neutrality.

Seems its implementation was ‘politically forgotten & lost’- until now- resulting in the eventual invasion by an equally irrational decision made by Russia’s Mr Putin.

It should have been a case for excellent diplomacy, the International Courts & the UN! Not by yesteryear’s brutal DNA of a Neanderthal instinct.

Further, President Viktor Yushchenko amended the Constitution by stating that the country’s final security goal is accession into NATO. These are obvious contradictions and signals an outward image of incoherent policies & goals- threatening Russia.

“Neutrality is a situation that needs to suit not only Ukraine to be internationally accepted and legally recognized but also to suit its immediate neighbours – Russia and now the political EU”!

Since the EU is a pedantic keeper of their treaties & their rule of law- it should also study the rule of law, treaties & Constitutions of feuding nations and become a respected neutral mediator & negotiator!

Another example of international recognized neutrality:

The cost of Austria’s 1955 international accepted neutrality towards the Soviet Union (USSR) was a pledge not only towards a military but also “ideological” neutrality.

Should Austria react political irrational and breach past undertakings- this will have serious repercussions to Austria’s stability. Russia does remember! Regardless if the USSR was abolished or not!

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_Neutrality

The “Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine Kyiv, July 16, 1990”- The Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR- Article X. International Relations reads:

……..”The Ukrainian SSR solemnly declares its intention of becoming a permanently neutral state that does not participate in military blocs and adheres to three nuclear-free principles: to accept, to produce and to purchase no nuclear weapons.”

Why can’t we as consumers have a say in where we get our energy? We have that say in practically everything else in our lives- the choice to buy Green, Bio, Ethically- or not. But gas and oil? We’re held captive by big corporations and governments and can only use the energy sources they’ve agreed to. And so, we’re in the situation whereby our money- our European gas money, and now almost none other- is being used to slaughter, kill, destroy and subjugate. We are paying for the destruction of Ukraine…

Europeans have mostly damaged their own economy so far – not a very smart responce. Also, we should’ve been more supportive of peaceful talks. Instead, every time an agreement was about to take place, some EU or UK leader travelled to Kiev and talked Zelensky out of it. We are sleepwalking into the WW3.

Thomas Becker To be fair, there were the Minsk 1 and Minsk 2 agreements brokered by Russia, Germany and France. Unfortunately Zelensky refused to implement the Minsk 2 agreement and Europe didn’t put any pressure on hom to do so. Macron tried in the last few weeks, but Zelensky remained stubburn as a mule. The attack on Ukraine is Putin’s biggest mistake of his career. In the negotiations that follow, he must be made to understand that he is endangering all of humanity and is drastically reducing its presence on earth. Its government commands the largest and richest country in resources. Unfortunately, after many political mistakes, it is in an economically weak state and a war of this magnitude only worsens the country’s situation and pushes it further into poverty. For this reason, fundamental reforms must be made that will allow the economy to take off and take the place that Russia deserves in the world economy. The second, third or fourth would be achievable.

I think it s the Europeans who will pay the high price for the sanctions for the war between RUSSIA and THE USA for Ukraine, that started 8-9 years ago. Actually nothing new- Europe usually pays the cost for the USA strategic adventures. Economic measures are good. Excluding Putin’s collaborators is good. The pity is that the EU missed out on diplomatic occasions before the war started. They behaved like the rabbit staring at the snake. The greatest backdraw in EU’s actions is to give up the Peace Project which it literally was founded on. Paying for arms which will be delivered into the conflict zone is an unnecessary and hastly reaction to the challenges we are facing. Seeing that the majority of EU memberstates are also NATO partners, this step was completely unconstructive. I call it Putin’s first victory in this confrontation. It is not about Russian invasion, it is about a US proxy war in Europe, which is to prevent the peaceful coexistence of Russia and Europe, block Europe post-Covid economic recovery. As a matter of fact, Russia belongs to Europe as historically it has always been before the birth of the US. Europe ought to join China to stop the war. How come Europe cannot learn from history? When Obama had to return to the Asia Pacific to fight China, the US had overthrown Arab governments with the “Arab Spring”, which had left serious refugees influx causing chaos in Europe and leaving Europe to handle the mess. The “Arab Spring” had also given birth of the ISIS Spring, which had threatened the building of a radical Islamic state across the Middle East towards Syria. Without the military action of Russia and Turkey, Europe and Middle East would risk swallowed by ISIS. This time, the US has staged a proxy war spearheaded by Ukraine at the heart of Europe. Again, the US has left the messy for Europe to handle, it has left to pressurise Nepal to surrender its sovereignty with the US$500 million “assistance”. Pressurize ASEAN leaders to meet the US president to boost election support of the Democrat Party and to challenge territorial integrity of China. How many times Europe have to suffer, how many people should be dying in order for Europe to learn they are committing suicide while putting itself on the US chariot of war when Europe desperately needs peace for post-Covid social and economic recovery?

The nationalist Western power over the world order!!!! If you look back far enough you will see that it is not about Ukraine but about the strategic point of Ukraine. The Republicans’ second strategic point is in GAZA! With the Jericho 3, they have Entire Europe and Iran under nuclear control. With Ukraine they have a means of pressure to get the whole Russian Federation under control. Zelensky has repeatedly asked for permission to install nuclear weapons. Why is this war now? That has everything to do with the defeat of Netanyahu and Trump. Biden is under the control of the Pentagon which at the end of Trump’s term has 4 Democratic strategists replaced by Republican strategists! Putin realizes all too well that he will miss the opportunity to join NATO and lose his Russian nationalist co-power over the NWO because of this strategic point in Ukraine. The democratic power offers him no other option than to join the Eastern counter-power. Biden suffers from dementia and stands by as an idiot who was put in charge by Republicans in the Democratic election just because of this weakness. When the Republicans regain the majority in the Senate in November, it will really explode worldwide. If the Democrats can recover in time and allow peace to return to the west, which is a small chance, the United Nations can continue its work. Even if Russia can now install a pro-Russian government in Ukraine, the Western nationalists will never give in and we won’t be able to talk about the United Nations as long as the Nationalist powers remain divided! Recognition of the two eastern provinces is just one move by Putin to justify his invasion of Ukraine. In the VB they sit with support on both sides, they will side with the victor and nationalism will continue. The West that oppresses the East and will continue to exploit its riches.

Look in yougoslavia, that land was bombed, so many victims? We take measures against Russia, but who took measures against the far right in ukraine (Svoboda, Azov…), who fought against people. everybody must have the choice, not the choice asked from EU or USA, referendum was a democratic way, with objective and neutral analysts on place, that is freedom, democracy, no extension of Nato (how many wars in such a few years), or Russia, or China. Politicians are dividing people at the place of gathering them.

Raphaël Lemoine watching Russian propaganda fairly tales before sleep? In 1991 Russians also were shooting at my parents, family, friends, neighbours and just ordinary folks and then said it was Lithuanians killing their own (chief propagandist later admitted cooking all that up and apologised). Somehow Russia is playing victim and the only ones attacked are its neighbours. Stop Rusofascism!

I think EU and NATO should make clear that they will do whatever it takes to make Ukraine win this war, without excluding any options, except invading Russian territory and nuclear war. If Ukraine asks for help to protect itself from this unprovoked agression, NATO is fully entitled to attack any Russian forces on Ukrainian soil, including Crimea and Donbass. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it would be wise to do so: if the Ukrainians can win the war themselves, with our support, that would be better. But Putin should know that whatever “successes” he has, will be met with fiercer resistance, harsher sanctions, more weapons for the Ukrainian army, and if needs be direct military involvement of NATO. Putin only understands force, there is not much point in talking if Russian troops are still on Ukrainian soil.

Dear friends, and to all supporters of peace,I know the situation is complex and that many of you are emotionally reacting to the purposefully touching images of official propaganda, but please try to step back. This world, remember in, is ruled by capitalist captains of industry, a corrupt political-media sphere and great banditry. Those people are compleltly disconected from reality and don’t realize the consequences of what they do (or don’t care).Albert Einstein said in 1934: “The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who look at it without doing anything.”.So I’m not going to deal here with the issue of Ukraine except to say that the “gas war” began well before this month of February. Make no mistake about it.Another thing is happening, there is a questioning of the hegemony of the USA in the world. Former President Mitterand already said in 1997 (in a posthumous book): “France does not know, but we are at war with America. Yes, a permanent war, a vital war, an economic war, a war without death apparently. Yes, Americans are very tough, they are greedy, they want an undivided power over the world. It is an unknown war, a permanent war, apparently without death and yet a war to death.”.In 2015, George Friedman advocated that: “The priority of the United States is to prevent German capital and German technologies from uniting with Russian resources and labour to form an invincible combination.”.I leave you to meditate on these quotes, look for other sources of information and draw your conclusions…Where I would like to draw your attention is to the power of the military-industrial complex of the dominant countries. Look at the figures of the Defence and Armaments budgets of the various states (as well as the arms contracts sold to their allies or the use of mercenary companies – both Russian and American) and you will immediately understand that above the fray are the merchants of death. So, even if I have been advocating for a long time for European countries to leave Nato and finally build a Defence Europe, the ideal would be to start a real forced march towards the complete demilitarization of all countries. Because yes, it may come as a surprise, but I am in favour of banning the manufacture and sale of weapons all over the world. That it becomes such a powerful taboo that no one thinks seriously about producing them anymore.Utopian, you might say?Utopia is precisely the ability to think outside the box. As a conscientious objector and anthropologist, I know that this may seem naive to many people, yet it is the most sensible solution. A weapon, once it has been made, there is always a risk that someone will use it one day. And arms dealers always prosper in times of war, but they’re not the ones who die on the battlefield. If you think, as I do, that this world would be more beautiful if the bellicose, the greedy and the dishonest were prohibited from enlarging it, do not hesitate to share this text. May it resonate as a condemnation of all those who cause so much suffering in the world, whatever their side.May God keep you safe!Note that this publication is in public mode on my FB page, so you can share it if you want.

Putin has been frustrated since 1989, at the end of the wall in Berlin. And now he’s taking revenge. And he is patient. He will totally conquer Ukraine, no matter how long it takes. He will neutralize Zelinsky (dead or alive) and eventually fold the militant people of Ukraine. Vintage Soviet style. And Europe will say: sorry Ukraine, you are on your own now. That’s the price you have to pay for a “free” Europe.

Because the EU has underestimated the signals from Russia over the years. The Eu is as imperialistic as Putin , and promising Ukraine membership to NATO was totally wrong .They knew that well themselves, but provoked Putin even more. † This made him a ticking time bomb.Ultimately, this conflict will have to be resolved at the negotiating table. But I completely condemn Vladimir Putin ‘s behavior . But the EU is co-responsible and the Ukrainian people are the victims in this whole geopolitical game.

⚠”””””Russia has clearly set the conditions it considers necessary to resolve the Ukrainian crisis, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference on Saturday.”We outlined the conditions we consider absolutely indispensable to resolve this [Ukrainian] crisis, both in the president’s speeches and in the statements of our delegation at the negotiations. We believe it indispensable to eliminate the threat that has been created for years by the NATO members on Ukrainian soil against Russia,” the top diplomat said.He recalled that these conditions include the demilitarization of Ukraine, its denazification and a neutral status.”Well, and, of course, the fact that Crimea has long been part of Russia. This is a fact that must be recognized. And the independence proclaimed by the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics within the borders of the respective regions must be recognized as well,” the foreign minister stressed.””””⚠

EU is failing to encourage Ukraine to defend itself through dialogue, instead, the union is spending tax payers money to encourage a war that could have been avoided.

EU does not have a foreign policy, as it follows USA. If it has, it would never permit to arrive at this situation. All sanctions are completely contra-productive and this had to be obvious, if there were real and functional foreign policy. Making statements is not a policy, preparing papers and briefings is not a policy. EU does not have experienced real diplomats who could lead EU through the crises. And it is now to long years like that.

Way past time the rest of the world sanctioned america, they’re the ones putting these puppet presidents in power… And get them to remove their 700 army bases worldwide, then we’ll get peace…

Sanctioning Russia while USA has been harassing middle eastern countries for 20 years is at least hypocritical. Especially considering the fact that the sanctions are hurting Europe only and noone else as the US is being benefited by Europe searching for different sources of petrol and LNG. So for now all we experience are inflated prices and reduction in quality of living to protect a country that the US told us to not because we suddenly became the good samaritans

Europe’s response risks to fuel a third world war. When two parties are in conflict, the third party ought to calm them down rather than giving arms to kill each other.

  145. avatar
    JT HK

Stupid! Russian military operation should not turn to an invasion if Europe can take the led to negotiate rather than following the US-led to sanction. Even more ridiculous, it is reported that the US is buying Russian oil and resale to Europe at a higher price. European leaders’ irrational and irresponsible decision is hurting its own people and killing European industry.
