Europe is watching the turmoil in the US with anger and horror. George Floyd, an unarmed black man, died in police custody after Officer Derek Chauvin restrained him by pressing his knee against the handcuffed man’s neck for nearly nine minutes. Floyd’s death was just the latest in a long line of police killings of black men in America, but in this case the frustrations boiled over into protests.
The demonstrations have been mostly peaceful across the US, but there have been scenes of violence and even looting. The response from US President Donald Trump has been to “inspect” the White House bunker, threaten to deploy the military against US citizens, and tweet out statements so divisive and incendiary they earned a rare public rebuke from Twitter for “glorifying violence”.
However, Europe should not imagine racism is a uniquely American problem. If Europeans want to do something to affect positive change, they should turn to the situation in their own countries. The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights reports that racism in the EU is “widespread and entrenched”. Research by Harvard University into implicit racial bias among over 288,000 white Europeans shows they were “slower to associate Blackness with positive words such as ‘Good’ or ‘Nice’ and faster to associate Blackness with negative concepts such as ‘Bad’ or ‘Evil””.
Is the problem of racism in Europe getting worse? And, if so, are racist politicians to blame for ‘normalising’ hate speech? In Italy, polling has found that racism became more acceptable during far-right politician Matteo Salvini’s time in government; for the first time in a decade, a majority of Italians did not condemn racism totally, and 45% felt racism was justified. There has been academic research suggesting our norms against racist speech have been eroding as it becomes more common.

Agree. Have no connection to colonization or black oppression but living in the U.S. it is acceptable to mock, denounce, and belittle white people. In Yugoslavia, Tito used the threat of force to keep racism under control for decades, and it worked – until he died. Then the whole place went to hell. Northern Europe essentially tries to ban racism and pretend it doesn’t exist, and one gets the impression that this is not so much because of how they feel about racism, but because of how they want to be perceived. The reality belies the pretence.
Pushing back against racism and racist agendas is messy and difficult. There are no shortcuts or quick, easy solutions, there is no avoiding awkward, uncomfortable discussions, and there is no evangelical truth about what is or isn’t racism – people disagree on it.
Everybody has problems with racism, but I worry more about Northern Europe. In Southern Europe racism is out in the open. In Northern Europe people hide it and suppress it for appearance’s sake. Thus, when things go wrong, people have no outlet to express their very human fears and misgivings, and no opportunity to be confronted with real human beings instead of charicatures. The apprehension festers, any expression is met with denial and social punishment, and when there is a backlash it is sudden, extreme and virulent, like a compressed spring releasing energy.
Northern and Eastern Europe have a tradition of fixation on the purity of their bloodlines. They have rushed to imitate the US to seem virtuous, but they are not prepared to live with material consequences of their own choices – ethnic and phenotypical diversity in their own societies. As per usual, they then blame imaginary enemies and conspiracies for their own choices.
Southern Europeans are already regarded as racially inferior by other Europeans and aren’t so fixated on ‘blood purity’. Racism is more open and chauvinistic, and while from a northern perspective this may make society seem more hostile, it also makes it easier to confront honestly than simply banning outward expressions of racist ideas and making believe that they have been legislated out of existence.

And this issue being raised via the horrific death of George Floyd at the knee of police is a very good time to address reality. Face up to what can be done to stop this brutality on ‘any’ human being, regardless of the colour of their skin. That man was murdered with consent (police do so with public agreement) in broad daylight without one man or woman, of any colour, going to his aid. Now why was that?
Your opening headline for this thread is a shocking statement coming from a political website. It implies that it is a true occurrence accepted by your organisation as the problem being defined as ‘racism’. Meaning the colour of a persons skin being the reason political changes are taking place, due to that ludicrous and unfounded statement. It is an easy ploy in order to turn the uprise away from its real catalyst, the horrendous state of the economy. A split society or people without unity cannot address the cause if they fight within their community rather than looking at its face. Divided they fall. A well known phrase. The one most important unity all oppressed people have is ‘poverty’ and how it has grown exponentially in all races today and is the main issue in all ‘classes.’ It is a class issue.
Black men are killed by police in the USA on about the same level as white people when they are seen as committing crime. It is the crime rate that is the basis of that figure. And nobody wants to address that important fact. You cannot arrest white men, Asian men, Oriental men for crimes they do not commit. The rate of crime is much higher in black areas, hence the higher level of criminal violence against them. That is what is unacceptable. The fact that policemen are crazed into a kind of killing instinct toward their malevolent prey, no matter their skin colour. And, until that known fact is addressed and why it is so, will only make the situation worse. Place the blame on reality, not a cover up. There can be no plausible resolution in hiding from the stats.

If you research the Western world you will find this follows through most of these states. Newly defined laws have seemingly increased the occurrence of State violence against its population. Since the poor became poorer and the middle classes were found trying to live at the level of previously poverty stricken people, crime rate in all sections of the population has increased dramatically. Look into the truth of that. Rather than pretend race is the cause, try the reality of economic malfeasance.
Then address the difference of cultural expectation on law and order within the various groups. All of which are vastly different in principle, motive and reaction.

The US Congress ratified the 13th amendment in January 1865 by abolishing slavery. It wasn’t the current administration being ~4 years in office condoning and ignoring police brutality, but successive administrations before that.

To add a short note. I could give quite a few non functioning economies of today, but these two in particular show a lack of both best interest logic and an example of how to take a thriving economy and destroy it, from a position of violent revenge and lack of economic understanding.
Haiti, the once French led island in the Caribbean, enjoying a lucrative economy to the utter violent mess it is today, after the French pulled out. Ignorance can be bliss, as the saying goes, but in this case, I don’t think so.
Then, back to South Africa, Zimbabwe. Once a British led area, referred to as the Bread Basket of Africa’s south. Look at it now, another poverty stricken, violent mess, begging for civilised intervention. Both having a vengeance for the people behind their ‘historical’ prosperity.
What I find disturbing here though, is the dysfunctional response of our present leaders to address this obvious, sort after, destruction. And why they believe we should be sending our contemporary brave people in to try and clean it up.
What we see live on our TV sets would have to be thought an idiots attempt at reclamation of our state. As if the destruction being carried out was with our leaders consent and encouragement. Whilst those in the line of duty are used as victim fodder with their consent and approval. That somehow, taking a knee for mistaken notions of globalism was going to save our country from the fate we see taking place elsewhere on the planet. Not one of those people willing or seeing a need to walk away from planned chaos, in order to allow politicians themselves to stand on their constructed front line. Forced to face decisions they clung to over decades. Convinced their idealism was working. Rather than research and face the examples they have in front of them proving they did not. Why should those who had nothing to do with the proposed political mayhem, any simpleton could have foreseen by their reasoning, take the knife, beating or acid in the face on their behalf? That is the job of the bodyguard. Not a police force there by consent of the people they are trying to protect.

I think racism is dramatic in the news business and used politically to draw attention away from the issue of wealth. I woke up again this morning with the words booming from Sky as top line news that, 88 black people in the US 2020, had been shot by police. How terrible is that in a so called civilised society.
Perhaps if all lives ‘mattered,’ white people would have been included, Sky would say how many white people had been shot by police in the US 2020. Then perhaps we would have a better perspective on racism being its fundamental cause.

Why is it so difficult to find serious facts on crime and race, especially the homicide rate. If race is going to be used as a political tool, then open up honest facts around the issue, rather than play a game of discrimination and inequality in order to divert the public with a smokescreen. There is no solutions to be found in a game of pretence. It simply distorts reasoning.
