Finally, something we can all agree on! The 2018 World Cup is about to begin and people of all political stripes can come together in their shared love of the beautiful game. Yes, there are those who may grumble, but billions of eager fans are expected to tune-in from around the world. Like it or loathe it, the world cup is consistently the most-watched sporting event in human history.
Not that you can keep politics out of sport. From the 1936 Olympic Games in Nazi Germany to today’s American athletes protesting against police brutality and racial inequality by kneeling during the US national anthem, politics is always there.
To put it mildly, relations are strained between Russia and the West at the moment. Furthermore, FIFA has been criticised for ignoring human rights violations in Russia, including 2017’s “anti-gay purges” in the Russian Republic of Chechnya. Then, of course, there are the corruption scandals that have dogged FIFA itself in recent years.
Nevertheless, this is a rare opportunity for people from all over the world to unite. We’re all there, watching together, hoping for victory and braced for defeat. So, as a slight diversion from our regular programming, we wanted to ask our readers which team they fancy to win the 2018 World Cup. Let us know what you think below:

These results are not that acurate because everyone votes for their country. I’m from Sweden but there is no way that we will win, even though I would love that, because there are many countries better than us. Having said that 30% that voted for Croatia are all Croats. I think that everyone who follows football would think that Croatia going to the semifinal is a huge success for them. I think that it is foolish for Croatia to have more votes than Germany, Brasil, Argentina and others which are the favorites to win it all. I vote for Germany to repeat, because that is my opinion and I think that that wi happen, but I would really love for my win it all, but I won’t vote for that, because it is unrealistic. But I think that it is nice that Croats are optimistic and hope that they won’t be dissapointed if they don’t win as they are everytime Serbia crushes them in Basketball even though they are much better and more successful
