trumpBrexit was the appetiser. Now it’s time for the main course. President Trump’s victory will no doubt be sweet for some, but it will leave a bitter taste in the mouths of many of our readers (judging by the results of our reader poll, which had Hillary as the favourite).

President Trump is, without a doubt, the biggest upset in mainstream Western politics since the Second World War. Initially dismissed as a “joke candidate” by critics, none of Trump’s opponents are laughing now. With control of both houses of Congress, Trump will begin his presidency in a powerful position.

The new president has pledged to build a wall with Mexico (paid for by the Mexican government), nominate a supreme court justice to overturn Roe v. Wade (opening the way to making abortion illegal), begin the mass deportation of illegal immigrants living in the United States, ressurect and expand the US “enhanced interrogation” program (which critics say amounts to state-sanctioned torture), place a ban on Muslims entering the US, and appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton (potentially overstepping his constitutional boundaries)

If the intent was to give complacent elites a wake-up call, then it’s now been heard loud and clear. However, many worry that “Trumpism” has been validated by his victory, and paves the way for a more bullying, paranoid, thin-skinned style of politics. If President Trump is unable to enact his program despite having control of Congress, who will he blame next?

Will President Trump make America great again? Does America need to be made “great again”? Will he give voice to disillusioned voters, and steer the US on the right course? Or will his presidency have a corrosive affect on American (and global) democracy? Let us know your thoughts and comments in the form below, and we’ll take them to policymakers and experts for their reactions!

In the USA the white kids are a minority today. The white population in 4 years will be a (old) minority. It’s the same as the Brexit vote.

    • avatar
      Chalks

I guess that’s how the Native Americans felt when the white man wanted to dominate.

It’s nothing like the Brexit vote. Brexit was voting for sovereignty over our own country. This is more akin to voting for a rich, self aggrandised and less realistic (possibly more bigoted) Farage as PM!

Funny that is exacly what the eu is trying to do in Europa , kil al the White and start a civilwar !

It’s statistics : white folks prefer the pill, worried about the future and wanting a happy life for themselves, etc, having no more kids, while the other races don’t give a f**** and having babies … You can put that on the greed (spend more money on me, not on having kids), loss of morals, freedom of choice, take your pick ..

This could actually be a very good opportunity for Europe to take over the US economical influence over the world.

If only we were not a bunch of ignorant, disunited, selfish countries united by a mere and insulse currency with lack of any other kind of union.

LOL EU is pretty much irrelevant. Can get their act together here, let alone step into USA’s shoes. Which by the way, you assume will loose it’s influence. And in any case, China is already chewing that bone.

The EU is falling apart at the seams with a ever declining manufacturing sector, rising unemployment and a currency that is destroying Southern Europe so how exactly will it take over from anyone ??

Your comment is just more wishful thinking of the EU fanatic who ignore reality at every turn.

The EU has only done one thing for every state in the EU, destroyed the fundamental industry… Agriculture! Sice then nothing food has come out of it and especially their secretive agreement they were about to sing with the USA. So for me this European union is rubbish.

Doubtful. In any event we need to insulate ourselves as far as possible from the economic effects. In the short term the euro will rise and rise as a safer currency as Anglo-Saxon populist movements make the dollar and pound volatile. There is only so much of that we can take before we go right back to where we ended up last time this happened: with a big bubble of an economy. Let’s be sensible this time. We need a euro that Mediterranean economies can live with.

In long term one of two things will happen. Trump will be contained in his ambitions by USA’s own constitutional checks and balances, theoretically designed to withstand an authoritarian president, with Supreme Court and Federal Reserve checking him. In that case it will go back to business as usual for most of the world. The other possibility is that a large populist uprising will make the US ungovernable unless Trump can get his way. In that case they will have to grant him some concessions. I doubt those will be protectionist economic measures, probably they will be things like his “wall” with Mexico.

It’s not impossible, though, to imagine the USA could become like Venezuela. If Trump’s economy plummets he will only need a scapegoat to blame. It looks like “blame the Jews” is back in fashion these days in the West, so that’s always one possibility. Then he will continue governing even as his policies prove disastrous as whoever the scapegoat is will absorb the blame. The USA has a lot farther to fall, but the splat at the end is the same.

We should have contingency plans in place. Still, my assumption at this point is that the rest of the US government will simply stonewall any proposal of his that could seriously threaten US economic preeminence. That will leave his presidency as essentially a Duterte-style circus with fundamentally domestic consequences that shouldn’t badly effect the world economy. Remember the Federal Reserve is quite independent.

I think the thing to watch is does Trump attempt to replace Yellen with a protégé? If he does that is a very bad sign that his presidency really will cause global economic damage.

    • avatar
      Tarquin Farquhar

      @Michael Šimková
At least the USA can curtail its president with all its democratic ‘checks and balances’ the same cannot be said for those ‘competencies’ handled by the quintet of EU presidents!

Central banks shouldn’t be independent. “Independent” central banks always screw the people to benefit Wall Street. Central bank independence should be abolished very quickly.

c80% of NATO’s budget is provided by the USA and the UK – I’m sure the unelected beurocraps in the EU will enjoy massively increasing their defence budgets in order to get to half the current spending levels.

A country doesnt need to be great. A country should make sure that the people have food, water, a home, work, education, that their human rights are being protected and live in peace with other countries. Thats enough

    • avatar
      Ion Marian

That doesn’t mean great ? Look what the past 8 years meant for America: unemployment, debt, powerty, desperation. So, it’s time to put Obama in jail, with Hillary, and make America great Again !

    • avatar
      Trici Franz

Luckily nobody can be just put in jail for nor reason in democratic countries. And I guess you have not followed the economic development in the US when Obama was governing. He was fixing many mistakes from the Bush aera, tried to give health insurance to everybody (which mainly wealthy people tried to prevent) and the economy went up. Nobody can prevent a desperation, since it will always follow an upswing, thats how economics work. An endless upswing doesnt exist. But with Obama actually the economy recovered as it hasnt for decades and is doing very well at present. If you seriously think, that a prejeduced racist can help your country in any way, you have a look at German history. The outcome is terrible

    • avatar
      Chalks

      Agreed.

    • avatar
      Robert Tol

Yes but youre Merkel isn’t doing very wel either Trici Franz ! Or are you saying she is a racist to ? You are wright about the health insurance ( that was a good thing ) but he failed with the rest , Amerika wasn’t getting better and hè fucked up with his global polici

    • avatar
      Trici Franz

I think people can say a lot about Merkel, I am not her biggest fan. But the economy in Germany is doing so well, that people have excellent health insurances. Whoever doesnt have work, wil get money for rent, electricity, water and food. In addition help for furniture, electrical appliences, also health insurance ect. The pension system is not working well, that is true. But her and the Greek government are the only ones in the whole of Europe who showed enough humanity to except all the refugees, saying, we cannot leave people in their misery. So I do not see your point. In the US the economy is thanks to Obama doing better then the years before he was governing. He failed in some things, that is true. But he tried. Sadly he didnt have the support from other politicians he deserved. I do not agree with the international politics. It has been quite reckless. But more reckless than under Bush is not possible

If trump keeps true to his word he will drain the cess pool in washington , and maybe the eu elite will scatter like roaches.
We in europe also need to put the power back in the hands of the people .
A great day for democracy …!

  12. avatar
    Te Zeu

Political corectness and gobalization are HUGE CRAP and I hope Trump keeps his promises he made during the elections towards this aspect. We need our common sense back, the old school values were good as they were, enough with the neo-marxism. There’s no such thing as a child with two moms/dads same as there’s no peace between immigrants and natives AS LONG AS the immigrant is forced to migrate. If it s my dream to become and american citizen and I do my best towards that, chances are that I will succeed. But if I wanna be american because poverty forces me to leave my country that won’t work. Help people where they live as journalist Roy Beck said in a TEDX conferrence. I will turst Trump as long as the U.S. stops “bringing democracy” by force all around the world. IF as long as he’s president America keeps invading any country then it means nothing changed.

He will break the US political system, he has already exposed the GOP for stating what they really stand for. I live in Greece and Tsipras is breaking the Greek policitical system which is bureaucratic and corrupt and is at great cost… Bank shut downs, capital controls, exodus of Greek companies… Some argue it is a like a great or huge Brexit but it is more than that because of companies having become more powerful than government… So it’s like a combination I guess… Not sure how it will turn out… Not sure if they will be able to bring him down for legal issues regarding his business practices before his term is over… He cheats a lot…

That Americans choose to dig their own grave is their problem after all, although I am no fan of this kind of narrow nationalist thinking. His vision of ‘great’ is a careless, ‘rich takes all’ position that certainly won’t make America any more attractive than it is today. Yet… the big problem is the rest of the world. We had a small window of opportunity. Now if the disunited States pull out of the Paris agreement, the world is toast, quite literally so too. #COP22

American vote was the result of corruption, inequality and oppression..how about make Europe more democratized, run by people who are elected and no bureaucrats of the elite..how about really believe in the values that defined Europe at the first place, and give to some nations their lives back..Clinton wanted it all, money , power, and she was part of any scandal (Clinton foundation, bribes, money under the table, psycho statements about nuclear wars). ultimately you pay the price if you don’t give people something back.Even the illusion of it. So, Europe has much more to consider if it indeeds wants to be united. And all start in the heart..and the good faith..if economics go in the way, and banks play games in favour of the few, at the end..there will be another Trump!Make Europe great means clarity in decisions, and respect of other individualities, and way of living. See the wall, before you hit on it

Ha!!! Why the surprise? It was obvious for months, as was Brexit. The idiots who give out the massive spin and it’s shite are so out of touch with the man in the street. Either that, or they believe the people are dumb enough to continue on a downward spiral without a fight.

How the Globalists are in a panic. Which is the very best news the ordinary man and woman in the street could have. It means ‘he isn’t’ one of those who have used and abused them and, as a result, they cannot gauge what it is they will be facing as punishment for the ‘impoverishment’ of the American people. If President Elect Trump does as he swore he would they are at last free to rise up and start their lives again.

And the collaborative news groups are refusing to accept the democratic vote of the people, just as they would not over the British peoples Brexit. They will do everything they can to stifle the voice of the electorate. They continue every minute with their lies and horrendous propaganda. It hasn’t dawned on them, yet, that their old pay cheque has finished. The Americans are free, at last, to once again return to the lifestyle they worked and fought for all their lives.

And how scared the European spokesmen are. Merkel with her threats of ‘you dare to stop our mass immigration and we won’t cooperate with you.’ She doesn’t realise the German people are going to be rid of her and her team as soon as they can set themselves free. As are the French. As Trump has said, the ordinary man will not be ignored again. The power of the people has risen to thwart the traitors they had in the Globalist collaborators.

If I was Trump, I wouldn’t go near the Obama White House. It is a trap and whatever he says will be used against him. As he knows very well, politics is a very dirty business and he better get used to it.

All that aside, well done him. What an amazing two years. Coming out of nowhere to oust the creeps from a grip on the greatness of the people he has promised to represent.

However, he has to remember, ‘the world expects.’ He cannot let them down.

And to the Clinton camp from the Republican winner.

Now please explain why you feel a man who has no criminal record and his only call is for ordinary Americans to have a fair shake after the Clinton, Obama good guys left them to rot in hell for 16 years between them. Economy trending upwards? Are you blind and deaf. The American economy is in bankruptcy. Oversaw the proliferation of rampant contaminated food obesity so bad they cannot walk and did nothing to stop the abuse by the big business selling this crap. Have you looked at the young student women working for a Clinton win, because, wait for it, she was a woman and a ‘feminist.’ Oh please!

All that to swallow and this morning, the panic by her family as they beg for this ‘innocent woman’ to be given a pardon by Obama before Trump can stick her in jail where she belongs. No innocent person needs to beg for a pardon my friend.

And you want us all to be led by a self serving, immoral family, as close to the Mafia as you can get. Robbed the people of Haiti by money laundering 6 billion dollars in the Clinton Foundation. Wheeling and dealing with the Saudis and Qataris who this very day are slaughtering women and children in Yemen. Do you take us all for fools?

Give me a break. Big money is behind this fear of what may happen tomorrow and unless you are one of them you should be on your knees thanking the fates for a man who is not tied to this bunch of illegals and would want to take up that shit job to free his country of elitist thieves and traitors.

Rid of them is what we should see. And yes, she and Bill should go to jail. And for a minimum of all the years they forced political prisoners who blew the whistle on them akin the Chelsea Manning, Julian Assange and Snowden.

The corrosive effect on American democracy is already felt. Only 55,6% of the electorate bothered to go to the poll and among them 48% voted for Trump. Thus in fact the new American president was elected by 27% of the people. This is a symptom of a dysfunctional society and its democracy.

    • avatar

That is how democracy works everywhere not just America, those who didn’t vote had the freedom of choice whether to or not
..and before critisizing American democracy it may be better to look closer to home…. the last EU elections had a 43% turnout of which only 30% voted for Juncker’s party i.e 12% of the EU electorate voted for him….which is not strictly true because he hadn’t even been nominated before the vote, but hey…that’s EU “democracy” for you

He forgot to say to whom it will be great again.

Millions of Americans are in trouble and those where the ones who voted onTrump.

Many of those people can understand the 4-word slogan “Make America Great Again”. And that’s all Trump had to say.

Trump was so nastly attacked by everyone else, that those people believed that he was, in fact, fighting the status-quo, because the system was fighting him.

Of course, Trump is not against any system at all. He’s part of it.

Trump will make America great again, but not for those who voted on him.

‘AGAIN’ means way back, when white people were almost (or in fact) entitled to oppress minorities. Similarly, “We take our country back”, professed by Brexit figures in reality meant, we take it back from the EU citizens who live and work here. They are wrong false and stupid, but they brought wide masses to the polls in panic. It’s a major deceit on people in this decade and also, it causes bad blood in the society, which is very dangerous and despicable.

    • avatar
      catherine benning

      @ Maros Podstupka

You are so deluded it takes the breath away. Who fills your mind with this kind of propaganda? And how do they get away with doing this?

First of all, your statement about the aims of ‘white people’ are racist. If, as you claim, white people, oppressed minorities, which are no longer minorities in my country anyway, why did they choose to come and flood Europe and the UK with their presence? Is it because their own countries were so wonderful to them they decided rather than stay and fight for their rights there, they willingly abandoned their homes in order to come somewhere where they were going to suffer more than were before they left those homes of theirs? And today are now fighting, even harder, to leave their country of origin in a panic in case their invasion may be stopped by the will of the ballot box?

What is wrong with taking our country back? India did it under Gandhi from the British, and they are hailed as having done the right and sensible thing when they decided to do so. Do you call the Indian people racist for taking their country back from a culture and lifestyle that did not resonate with their wishes and way of life? No of course not for they are a minority people are they not? But the truth is, you won’t say that because they are not ‘white’ and tolerant of such abuse.

Here Gandhi is telling it like it is.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZVsWzIb6Vk

And the ludicrous sentence you use to tell us we are wanting to take our country back from Europeans who have come here to find work and live a decent life with their families. The British people were taken into the EU under false and illegal means. We were not asked until two years after Heath signed us over to Europe, by giving us a false and controlled referendum, that was an abuse against our constitution and the rights of the British people. And he did it because he was given £40,000.00 of European money. Additionally it was alleged he did it under blackmail because of his connections to illegal sexual practices with children.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cIInxTAWMo

And please tell me why the Europeans who come to the UK do not attack their own governments and get them to supply them with work and the welfare equivalent to the UK, rather than expecting us Brits to make it good for them after our fight? What is wrong with all these people of the world that rather than fight for their own society to emulate ours, they decide to burden us with their problems and then try to change our country into the same mess they left behind at home? Additionally, have the audacity to tell us we are ‘racist’ and ‘xenophobic’ because we don’t want their culture in our homeland. Race and colour of skin has nothing to do with it our voting, it is content of character and the horror of cultures that cannot adopt our lifestyle no matter how much we give them in comforts. They have no fight in their own homeland, they save it only against us as they can get away with it in our society.

We went to the polls in frustration against our governments as they had and have abandoned us, our way of life and our cultural lifestyle, for the sake of others from outside our borders and did it without once asking us if that was what ‘we’ wanted and were willing to pay for. And we, my friend, pay the wages of our elected Parliament. They are our employees, it is not the other way around in our democracy. They did not look after their constituents as they were paid to do, they were traitors to their people.

And what is despicable, is that you and people like you feel you have a right to invade our country without first asking the people of our country, if that is what they want. And as the polls are making very clear indeed, the ones who have not been brainwashed, or, who are not the invaders, don’t want this upheaval brought in from outside our borders in any shape or form. In fact, what is despicable and dangerous is that you think we should accept it and accept it without uttering a word about how ‘we’ feel.

Time for massive change and quick.

    Make Europe great again!

    1. abolish the Euro
    2. replace EU with EEC
    3. halt immigration by phony “refugees” and expel anyone hostile to our culture
    4. repeal existing trade treaties, especially those with ISDS or something similar in them
    5. put on trial those who sold out our democracies to the undemocratic EU in a Nuremberg style tribunal
    6. tariffs against countries with much lower wages and much lower protections for workers
    7. ban hostile ideologies like neoliberalism, make advocating it a crime
    8. prosecute bankers for the 2008 crash
    9. lower taxes for people earning less than the equivalent of 50k “Euro”
    10. increase taxes for those above 1 million, including artists and football players

President Trump will make America Great Again!

The Republican victory should safeguard the Constitution, setting the country in the right direction. Another Democratic victory would have threatened the First and Second Amendments.

Hilary Clinton pondered why she lost. She was simply on the wrong side. We are now closer to a female President, however. That would be more fitting with an overwhelmingly popular support with a candidate from either party

  61. avatar
    catherine benning

As of this morning, I feel President Trump will be master of and saviour of the great European culture. And my reasons for this are.

    1) He didn’t need this job, which is a burden on any sould. He had fame, money and power that suited him. He didn’t have to fight his way through two years of barracking to know what being the equivalent of President felt like.

    2) He had a conscience about how his American people and their country was being systematically destroyed. So, he made moves to do something about the mess on his own dollar.

    3) It sounds as if he intends to follow a similar path to Franklin Roosevelt and lift the US in order to bring back to the ordinary families and people of that place the lifestyle they had and expected from hard work, akin to richie Cunningham in Happy Days. That was how the butcher baker and candlestick maker lived there once his policies began to pay off.

$) He has a touch of Teddy Roosevelt in his character, which means he will face bears, stuff them, and stand them in his showroom for the world to see his ability to hunt and kill the enemy.

I wish him well, for, if he does it for the USA he will indirectly do it for us all.

“L’America grande ancora ” quando è stata grande l’America ? I suoi valori dove stanno ?

“The America great again” when she was America great? Its values where they are? Trump will not be to make it big in the world …… can indeed threaten with weapons or with blackmail other countries, and all submit to the great (domineering USA. Many call them the real terrorists that the world has known) but not this is to make it great, love is something else and must start from his people. Politics is the expression of the people and if a policy is “sick” is because his people is.

He is best chance America had in a 20 years. Elections exposed incredible widespread corruption and collusion, and he could fix it or atleast dilute it.

He wants to make America self-reliant with the buy American, hire American concept. It will have advantages and disadvantages. I think long term not advantageous to shut out other nations and outside views as this will act as a roadblock to improvement. Everything becomes increasingly global including job market, trade etc. He will not be able to stop that process. Will he be able to use that to America’s advantage? Good question.

Trump is an opportunist, MAGA was just empty rhetoric that he used to get into the white house. Now that he’s president-elect he’ll continue looking out for himself and himself alone

    This is great..
If building a wall, closing doors to foreigners, prohibiting abortion could once again, make America great.
Then yours is my benefit of doubt, President Trump.

Like all others of his kind, the Berlusconis and Putins and all, he will do what is best for his interests and his interests alone. We (the world) but also Americans will be lucky if it matches our interests. As for greatness, surely he will claim success. It’s for us to define criteria to define precisely what this means to not be fooled by his propaganda machine.

This demagogue’s slogan assumes that America wasn’t «great» anymore. I don’t really know what «great» means exactly, but if it means world power (military, economical, cultural, scientific, energy, and so on) but America never stopped being «great», in fact, it’s been steadily growing in the Obama administration in all those parameters. «Great again» in reference to what period exactly?… The Donald is a moron surrounded by morons, no hint of greatness there, I very much doubt he can maintain that growth and the social advancements under Obama and America’s reputation as a beacon of democracy and progress will stumble down (again) to basement levels.

You shouldn’t speak, it was your generation that sold our countries and our rights as Europeans down the drain.. you won’t have to live to see the disaster that you and your generation have created for my generations grand children

they always were a “apart world” and with this crazy clown they will be more. Time Europeans countries start to work together closer and make Europe greater.

    Great would be his resign.
World with exclusion is in no one interest nor expectations.
A vote of protest should let the protest to lead. América will be great again showing the world whats democracy can correct their own mistakes.

Is a 2 party system where the voting colleges actually vote, not the people, a democracy? I’ve lived in a number of countries that have proportional representation so every vote counts.
I don’t know if it could work in the US, but since every vote counts, a lot more people vote. I wouldn’t go to the lengths Australia does where voting is a legal requirement. In the UK we have a 2 party system and a lot of people don’t bother voting if there is a big majority from the party you don’t want because it’s pointless.
As for Trump, I honestly don’t know what he constitutes ‘Making America great again’. I’ve visited the US on numerous occasions and Over those 30 years, it’s always seemed to be the same. I have all the time in the world for the American people, but less certain of their leaders.

Not really interested in Trumpmania, he’s president elected in USA, that’s usa problem… probably he will make USA tinny as never saw, stating the racism issue, promoted by Mr. President…..
What you see, is what you can get. Nationalist selfishness at worst.
