turkey-freedom-of-speech

Europe’s refugee deal with Turkey was already controversial. The agreement, signed on 20th March 2016, allows Greece to automatically deport to Turkey all new “irregular migrants” arriving by boat. In exchange, the EU would resettle a Syrian refugee currently living in Turkey for every Syrian refugee returned. The idea is to discourage irregular migration and encourage more orderly refugee flows.

However, human rights organisations are fiercely critical of the arrangement, arguing that automatic deportations are illegal, and that Turkey is not a “safe country” to ship asylum seekers to. Furthermore, part of the deal was to grant visa liberalisation for Turkish nationals, something that EU Member States are now getting cold feet about.

Recently, the deal has started to come undone. In return for visa-free travel rights, EU countries had set out a series of conditions for Ankara to meet, including reform of Turkey’s far-reaching anti-terror laws. Human rights watchdogs believe the laws are increasingly being used to silence critics of Turkish President Erdoğan. Turkey argues that the current laws are necessary to fight the so-called Islamic State, and a Kurdish rebellion in the East of Turkey.

The present anti-terrorism laws have certainly been used against journalists in the past; Can Dündar, editor-in-chief of the Cumhuriyet newspaper, and Erdem Gül, the paper’s Ankara bureau chief, were both recently sentenced to five years in prison for publishing a video allegedly showing Turkey shipping weapons to Syrian rebels. Before the sentencing, Dundar survived an assassination attempt on the steps of the courthouse.

In any event, President Erdoğan has refused to soften Turkey’s anti-terror laws. Erdoğan also dismissed Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, who was seen as too friendly to Brussels, and is working to consolidate power in the office of the president. Given this, it is unlikely that concerns over civil rights in Turkey are going to abate any time soon.

Should press freedom be part of the EU-Turkey refugee deal? Should European countries ignore civil rights abuses in Turkey in order to get an agreement? Or should the EU stick to its values and scrap the deal? Let us know your thoughts and comments in the form below, and we’ll take them to policymakers and experts for their reactions!

So it would be better to allow 10 million Muslim syrians and another couple million Iraqis etc. to travel to Europe to live in Europe and to finance them and their families to the tune of billions of €?
Look I understand that in a political debate we love to sometimes talk philosophical and we love to speak of the ideal scenario that we would like to have but we live in the real world and in the real world the ideals that we would like to have would sometimes result in a worst-case scenario for our countries. And it is my position and I know many people see this as well that if we were to allow every single Syrian, Iraqi, Afghani, Iranian, Saudi etc. to come and live in our Western countries whether they deserve Asylum or not what we would be doing is we would be massively increasing certain problems that we have in our country’s already with some Muslims eg violent crime, threats against jewish people, violence agains women, terror threat, backward religious, world and political views gaining strength such as the call for islamic laws, anti americanism etc.
No muslims are not the source of all evil but we have a problem in Europe and it is real and difficult to solve, maybe impossible.

Turkey should be kicked out of NATO , refugees send back to Turkey and the EU should build fence against Turkey . Turkey is only using refugees to fight for power in the EU and they are going to use fifth column organised round church to undermine our security , economy and peace . Turkey is going to become our biggest enemy in the future because they are entering the EU but not like friends or partners but like aggressors . They are going to work together with the church and they are going to fight for power in the EU .

Like the EU had values to begin with.

But no, if you’ve any dignity you’re probably gonna have to step up your game and stop playing the games people like Erdogan like to play with their opponents.

If he wants to prosecute European nationals for criticising him, that’s probably a sign he wasn’t too into Western ideals anyway.

It certainly feels like we have abandoned our values in this deal with the Erdogan government yet I am finding myself having some questions I do not know the answers to a. what are our values exactly as Europeans? We sometimes “feel them” I think but do we ‘know’ them? Are they written somewhere? b. Do new countries that have just come in or have applied to come into the EU have to sign anything that says they have ‘read and agree to adhere by european values’ before being allowed in? Shouldn’t they? c. what are other, better proposals out there vis-a-vis how we in the EU can better deal with this refugee/migrant crisis now and also in the future? Where are they?

what values? what kind of a value could there be in designing and proposing this kind of a refugee deal? closing borders and deporting people, exchanging them like machinery… is this the new human rights value of europe? it should first criticize herself then her “partners” will be more valuable

We are all hypocrites. We all pretend that we really worry about the European values, we are crying like crocodiles about the refugees massacre, but we forget that the christian civilized Europe of the Enlightment , Ideals and Democracy, is also responsible for this catastrophy. We are the ones who are following the orders of the stupid americans and support Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar who are collaborating with ISIS. We are the ones who are destabilizing the region by exterminating countries where the refugees come from to steal their wealth. Ιts no use crying over spilled milk. We never had any problem of refugees, destruction and terrorism, until we involved. Now , think of which is going to be the next target after Paris and Brussels.

What values. Some European thinkers and philosophers had values and published them to awaken the people, but politics were never dictated by values but have always been motivated by greed. This is why we have now reached an impasse that the weak and vulnerable must pay for and be victimised once more, for the insatiable avarice of the 0,0001%. Either we decide to reject this malevolent system or it will take us all down with it.

First of all, I do believe, that Europeans (not only people in the EU) have and should continue to have common values. On the one hand the deal with Turkey ignores those values, one the other hand this way of dealing with the migration problem is the result of pressure coming from the public opinion. In various countries, migration (especially involving migrants from the middle east) triggers strong fears which forces politicians to act. Austria is just one example. I think, since alternative proposals (like the distribution of migrants) triggered strong opposition among EU member states, the deal with Turkey seemed to be the only way out, even if it is morally questionable.

    • avatar
      Athena

I agree Martin. Shouldn’t we though all be somehow openly, honestly and together with people from the Middle East already in or seeking to come to Europe be dealing with that fear instead of going to bed with Turkey though?

The real criminal act of all those incompetents in Brussels is that the EU – as an economic union – has been overall very beneficial for all participants, it had promoted economic growth.
Since the Juncker administration came to power they have been scr*wing up the whole thing, so in the end we will be stuck with loads of problems that will determine the coming decades (or more) and without the benefits.
    Chase away Juncker. Today.

Long ago Europe has abandoned its values (if ever had any….). Europe (with USA) made illegal interventions and invasions in Middle East (Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria), supported criminal jihadists, created the millions of refuges and killed more than one million… Inside Europe, the one and only priority is the support of the dirty Banking System (Markets!) and NOTHING ELSE. For what values we are talking about?

It’s not about refugees, it’s about passing the OIL PIPELINES through Turkey. or the Russian route, not through Turkey. If it was not Erdogan then Europe would be doing the favors of any present govt in Turkey.

      @Manolis Karras
It is not and it never has been about oil – the West has always been able to be energy independent IF it really, really wanted to.

The political elites of the West want to destroy Islam – the apparent scarcity of oil was just a pretext.

Really this question zooms into the very foundation of the problem with the EU leadership and its or their objectives.

From the outset this EU organisation has projected a view of global interference rather than what is in the best interests of all European continental citizens. Remember, those citizens are the ones who pay for its existence and who willingly, once upon a time, believed those who were going to run the club were doing it in the best interests of ‘Europe’ and ‘its’ people, in order to guard against war between each other and the world. That is falling apart and rapidly. We are in a constant state of war somewhere or other.

Somehow, along the way, it suddenly became a club for the wealthy and expansion was their objective. Expansion for their financial interests that did not include the plebs. No longer for the good of ordinary Europeans and all who sail in her. It began working on what was for the good of it’s financial conquerors. In fact it began to follow, in earnest, the mindset of true invaders, the wealthy elite. And all done under the guise of world power and globalisation which, we were sold, was going to be good for mankind in general.

Of course all this was going to be done by first, removing democracy. No longer was it to be through the will of the people, but, via the will of the appointed. Those full time politicians who were and are willing to bang the drum for whoever can pay the highest kick back. In whatever form that takes.

Now this group of unelected and out of touch half wits are asking whether we should renege on our deal with Turkey. Which shows what simpletons they are running this show.

First of all, who is it complaining about our or European duty to human rights? Also, whose human rights are they complaining about and taking into account? Certainly not the indigenous European. Who are these complainers and what are their names? Which organisations do they represent? Who and what set them up and is paying their bills? And what is their collective agenda?. Not the one they claim to have but the underlying personal aims of each and every one of them? And lastly, but most important of all, are they and their organisations European? Not their address but who they are. In other words, what is in it for them personally and collectively? And don’t come back with the Miss World answer of, for World Peace and the good of mankind. That is a blanket to hide under.

The deal made with Turkey was erroneous. What should have been asked is, why did Turkey allow the millions of unregistered and unscrupulous economic migrants to find their way to traffickers with boats, and whatever else they needed to invade Europe en masse, the way they have? What was in it for Turkeys leaders? They had and have an agender which in no way suits the European citizen or lifestyle. Never has and never will.

The guy running their show is out of his depth and is caught between a rock and a hard place. He is in the middle of the economic mafia. They have him by the cajones. They have been using him as a cover for their terror games for some long time and he fears opening his mouth to the world for obvious reasons. Drones seek out and annihilate. So, he screwed Europe and came out with a sweetheart deal that suited 75 million Turks as well as the country or countries he was covering for. Their interest being Turkey in the EU. A deal promised them by the players at the back of European policy for years. Right back in fact, to when Turkey made a deal with JFK called the Cuban missile crisis.

So, the answer to this is, the values held by Europe must first and foremost be in the best interests of European people. Allowing millions of uncontrollable, by our standards, migrants from all over the third world being dumped on our doorstep like abandoned children on the steps of the orphanage is not what we either want or can afford. Our civilisation cannot tolerate such damage and neither can our social cohesion or financial standing. Lets go one step further, do we collectively want it as citizens of this great continent, when it is obvious it will reduce our lives and the values of our civilisation to the level of unthinkable mayhem? History tells us that human nature will not accept this influx lying down. Whether you like it or not, we are locked in a battle arena and none of you are facing up to facts. You must either protect Europe and Europeans or get out of office and allow those in that will and can do it.

You cannot lead if you do not have a heart for it.

Read this it may give some insight. To those willing to see the light of course.

No, it’s not. Quite the opposite, others are using European values in order to take advantage of Europe. And, you are also wrong in referring to them as refugees, as only about 50% of them are. Obviously European leaders are incompetent if they allow a terrorist Turkish government in a country known for ongoing human violations to play around by sending refugees to Europe and blackmail the leaders of Europe. Europe should stand united and keep its boarders safe with strong army and answer to Turks militarily if they dare violate boarders or try to send illegal immigrants to Europe. Turkey being an ISIS ally only understands the lugguage of violence and that’s what Europeans should do to Turks when they try to smuggle immigrants into Europe. No visas to Europe and no talks for these barbarians joining the E.E. !!! The United Nations should impose heavy sanctions on Turkey!!

To make a deal with the devil, you HAVE TO abandon your values. This means you are too naive and inexperienced to think that the deal is in your benefit. This agreement is a cover for Erdogan’s efforts to establish a second Ottoman Empire in Europe. It should never have been done. I think there is only one initiative that EU could have insisted on. This is the guarding of the Turkish sea border in order to intercept departing boats with refugees and migrants. If Turkey had said it doesn’t have enough people for an effective coast guard, then EU could have provided the necessary number of policemen with a simple task – stop the boat before it goes on water, destroy it, detain the smuggler and give him to the Turkish police. Force Erdogan to accept European policemen for humanitarian reasons and solidarity, control the Turkish border and there will be no more drowning children and illegal migration to Greece. Where is Erdogan’s humanity, if he is purposefully leaving women and children to die at sea?

    “THE VALUES OF THE UNION

The Union is founded on the values of respect for human dignity, liberty, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities. These values, which are set out in Article I-2, are common to the Member States. Moreover, the societies of the Member States are characterised by pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality between women and men. These values play an important role, especially in two specific cases. Firstly, under the procedure for accession set out in Article I-58, any European State wishing to become a member of the Union must respect these values in order to be considered eligible for admission. Secondly, failure by a Member State to respect these values may lead to the suspension of that Member State’s rights deriving from membership of the Union (Article I-59).

In comparison with the existing Treaties, the Constitution has included new values, notably human dignity, equality, the rights of minorities and the characterization of the values upheld by the societies of the Member States.” Source: http://europa.eu/scadplus/constitution/objectives_en.htm According with the EU values on the first paragraph of ” human dignity, liberty, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights,INCLUDING the rights of persons belonging to minorities”,YES EU is not taking the right decisions yet.

End up the war in Syria the first place by standing with Russia. We should stop thinking that democracy is the solution. Democracy can only work in small Countries where people are highly educated. The Middle East needs stability and this can be only granted by military regimes. They need to get undergo a modernisation process that requires time and higher education. Topping up regimes in search for democracy will only result into chaos and leave a vacuum difficult to fill. So the first thing to do is to reestablish order. Eventually people will start returning to their homes.

The population wants no deal. The population wants border control that is independant from the neighbouring country.

    .

Brussels would sell its grandmother to get the Turks to keep the migrants so no, press freedom will never be part of any agreement but the deal will go ahead..

Enjoy the millions of Turks, Kurds & migrants who are about to invade Schengen.

    Vote Leave.

It’s really funny this ‘deal’… is it functioning yet? EU gave Turkey some privileges, money and stuff but what are we actually getting out of it? The population I mean…

what erdogan does to his own people is irrelevant to the agreement with merkel.. look the things are simply : we should not strike any agreement with Turkey they can’t be trusted

Freedom of the press should be mandatory for any deal, contract, arrangement, agreement, with Turkey or any other country or party. Period. No ifs, ands or buts.

America could deport mexicans for 50 years or so and eu cant deport illegal immigrants for like a year? The bad thing about current eu politicians is that they are willing to trash their current voters for new ones which were never part of europe and clearly doesbt give a damn about secularism

We don’t need Turkey . We don’t care for any deal with Turkey . Close border to Turkey and and of the story . They can solve their own problem , EU is not created to solve Arab and Turk problem .
