Paris

The attacks in Paris were designed to provoke fear. And Europeans are scared. Talking to colleagues, friends, family members, it’s clear that people have been deeply shocked by the shootings and bombings in Paris on 13 November.

There have been a series of atrocities in recent months: the bombing of a Russian passenger jet, the shooting of tourists on a beach in Tunisia, twin bombings in Ankara that left 99 dead. The day before the Paris attacks, suicide bombers in Beirut claimed over 40 lives.

But, for Europeans, these all seemed like far-away places; the co-ordinated attacks that left at least 129 dead and hundreds wounded in “modest, working-class neighbourhoods” of Paris have brought home the reality of the threat.

The attacks were described by French President François Hollande as an ‘act of war’ by Daesh, the so-called Islamic State (IS); a militant group that has carved out vast swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq, prompting tens of thousands of people to flee their homes as refugees.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has formally invoked the mutual defence article of the European Union’s treaties, calling on France’s EU partners to offer help. But what form should that help take? Where do we go from here? And how can we resist the fear that these attacks were designed to instil?

What would you ask Europe’s leaders after the Paris attacks? If you could talk directly to Europe’s heads of government as they decide how best to react, what would you say? Let us know your thoughts and comments in the form below.

LET’S NOT SACRIFICE OUR FREEDOM FOR A BUNCH OF FRUSTRATED LOSERS

    • Rather than closing our external borders and isolating Europe from the rest of the world…
    • Rather than closing our internal borders and putting an end to the freedom of movement within Europe…
    • Rather than bombing a region into oblivion and wait for the Jihadists to regroup somewhere else under a different name…
    • Rather than waging a futile war against an enemy who will hide behind innocent civilians…
    • Rather than putting military on the streets of our cities and give unprecedented powers to the state and the police…

    WE SHOULD:

    • CUT THE ISLAMIC STATE’S LIFE SUPPLY
    • STOP ALL TRADE WITH FUNDAMENTALIST STATES AND INDIVIDUALS
    • FREEZE ALL BANK ACCOUNTS OF EXTREMISTS
    • PUT AN END TO ALL WEAPONS TRADE
    • ISOLATE REGIMES SUCH AS SAUDI ARABIA AND ISRAEL
    • STOP BUYING THEIR OIL

But this will not happen… too many vested interests will keep our business and trade with these barbaric regimes going…. And not one politician will have the guts to even suggest this.

In order to protect our oil interests, our trade in weapons and our banking interest, we will close our borders, retreat in our fortress Europe and bomb the region instead, killing thousands of innocents in the process whilst not even remotely weakening Islamic fundamentalism… Worse, we will drive peaceful Muslims into the open arms of the Islamic State and extremism.

    SO FRUSTRATING, SO SAD

You have perfectly described the situation! I totally agree with you. Unfortunately, there seems to be a dead end in our road since politicians tend to look at all those vexed interests and nothing else seems to matter to them!

Resignation: especially Merkel who lately speaks too much stupidity. If she can’t solve it, extremism will “solve” the issue and no one wants that solution.

Common sense: Europe needs to finally focus on its own interest. Stop involving in Middle East (leave it to USA and Russia to make the problems) and solve the immigration issue with actions. Even Europeans, in their own continent are not allowed to “run around”. Germany admitted lost counting how many people entered. Until immigrants status is not confirmed they shouldn’t be a allowed to leave their camps. Immigrants would be limited to stay in the first country they enter Europe and border countries get military, financial support (Greece, Italy). I’m not against these people but who doesn’t come from European culture, won’t understand these standards and rules. That is why first they need to kept under surveillance and whose application is declined immediately send back.

I would say – seriously review your approach to the whole Middle East including:
    – stop oil dependency,
    – stop support or overthrow of local governments,
    – stop arms sales,
    – stop excusing Islam from fostering rage and hatred,
    – take the Middle East to task about their poor social policies,
    – all this includes Israel and its poor political behavior.

    SIMPLY THREE STEPS !!!!!

    1st STOP THE BLOODY WAR

2d SEND THE REFUGEES BACK HOME

3d HELP COUNTRIES AROUND SO NOBODY COMES IN

and keep them away from Europe !!!!

  5. avatar
    Dan Florin

I’ll ask how they see the development of those countries whose citizens are running away from war and poverty and what’s the timeline to solve their problems back home, in accord with their wishes. Then I’ll demand them to do that immediately.

Stop the islamic invasion, no other migrant outside UE can be accepted in Europe for 5 years.
All muslims inside EU must abide by European law and respect ALL principles , religion , values and laws of the European host country, otherwise they are to be sent where they came from.

Any terrorist , no matter the race or status, or religion, must be treated as a threat to civilization and public safety and law must prevale.

EU MUST PROTECT US, THE EUROPEAN CITIZENS, NOT THE ASIAN OR AFRICAN MIGRANTS.

Where is the political accountibility? We have been lied to, manipulated and our freedoms violated. I ask of our politicians to stop being islamoapologists. We are continously fed that this has nothing to do with Islam and it is a complete lie. Why do they continiusly do this? What is the reason? We are fed that Islam is peace and love while hundreds of verses in the Qur’an preach different. Hundreds of verse that leave no room for interpretations and are direct mandates of violence against non muslims. That promote violence, xenophobia, homophobia, pedophilia, misogyny and so on. It is time that our politicians stop making ridiculous excuses such as unemployment being a cause that drive the terrorists. It is time to put a spotlight on Islam and diagnose what it is and its place in our society that is totally incompatible with islam. An unbiased investigative inquiry must be done of islam so as to conclude if in fact it is a peaceful religion. And as well if our society should keep hosting and at times promoting islam. This attack has brought many issues to light. Many that our politicians have denied such as no go zones in European cities. Belgium’s prime minister has admitted today that one of their cities in Brussels is out of their control. And it is fact we have some in Spain as well. And this proves that our politicians have lied regarding multiculturalism, integration and uncontrolled mass migration. If we have cities which its residents cant follow basic laws, we have a huge problem. As well, this attack has proved the lack of border control as these savages came and went as they pleased, even when being known radicals. And proves as well what many have said about concerns regarding refugees. We have no way of knowning who they are. And these people are being forced upon us and putting at risk our security. It is time for accountability. And as well, while many in the EU government and others like Merkel and Hollande call for censoring of opposing views, going as far as asking Facebook to censor our posts, we have savages circulating through EU with weapons and explosives. As well as many websites and muslims preaching hate on our streets. Yet their concern is “racist” posts on Facebook. What they want is to silence dissidents to their agenda. And we will not have it anylonger.

Why do you continue to allow massive immigrant wave putting the indigenous culture on a course for destruction. If they where in uniform, this would be an invasion unlike anyone in modern history and their reaction would be different

  9. avatar
    Rui Sancho

The problem with you people is believing that the refugees are not a European problem, as in we have nothing to do with it. That’s not true. We also have responsibility. It’s not just the US and Russia and China directly or indirectly arming and funding IS. We have been doing it and keep doing it still.

I’m in favour of military intervention. I do not believe in a political solution, not before we strangle some countries economies.

I sincerely disregard and deny any government that mixes religion with State affairs, be it Islamic or Catholic. That being said, i’m not anti-religious.

I would expect them to say : “Islam is a problem, The Quran includes too many violent, intolerant and barbaric verses. There isn’t any consensus about its theology…. That’s why, if Islam wants to go on living within our borders, it needs to be reformed, framed and adapted into our societies of the XXIth century” … I would also ask them to resolve what’s happening in Syria , to eradicate ISIL, humanity really doesn’t need them … In the meantime, I want them to cease to welcome refugees since it’s difficult for us to deal with them ( terrorists can hide among them.. ) , and their countries will need them to recover after the conflicts … It would be better to help to create better legislation and temporary shelters in Turkey and Lebanon ….

Why do you attack Syria and cause more deaths in innocent people when this just happened to you and you condemned it at home???

    • avatar
      George

I also don’t understand why ISIS was bombed as a response to a terrorist act that came as a response to ISIS having been bombed…that’s the Musli way: a tooth for a tooth and an eye for an eye…

    • avatar
      Paul X

@ George what is your suggestion?

Let Daesh remain unchallanged so they rape and murder there way throughout the Mddle East to establish their Calephate?….because the indigenous population has no capability to defend themselves

…and anyone who wants to stick their head in the sand and believes”leave them alone and they won’t bother us” is naive beyond belief

    • avatar
      George

My suggestion is that the European countries are being dragged into this Musli-style mentality and cycle of violence. They should all come together and decide a course of action in common. Either bomb them all together so that they are totally destroyed and cannot retaliate against anyone in particular/at all or intervene in some other way. By deposing president Assad etc. These random bombings have led to nothing and this latest one was done impulsively and without consideration. We need to be better than them.

Most of the people in here never read the Bible to see how much violence includes. So the only solution for ALL the people is to be educated.Violence always brings violence.Too many religions crimes from all the three monotheistics religions .I am really sorry about ALL the religions victims.May the innocent victims in Paris be the last ones!!!!May peace and prosperity win in this fucking crazy Planet.

    Get rid of Schengen

The two most naive, ill thought out, ideological projects that have been dreamed up by the EU have both been epic failures. The Euro has brought some European countries to their knees financially and now Schengen will bring some to their knees due to lack of security

How much longer do we need to wait for the Euro-fanatics to finally admit their blinkered dreams were doomed to failure from the start. Bring back National borders and National currencies and the Common Market, then maybe the people of Europe can get back to living their life without so much fear for their futures

I would say…put more women on peace negotiation talks and pannels and include all the actors involved in the conflict…arm dealers if necessary, Al assad, the kurds, NGO’s , civil society if there is any remain of that..and end draw a plan to end conflicts in the area. It is not only religion, politics and economy involved it is also climate change that makes people flee from their homes.

    I would ask them to:

    1.) Secure our external borders.
2.) Help the migrants AT HOME where they culturally belong.
3.) Completely ban any religious and political forms of movement that incites violence. Even if it comes with the cutting of certain human rights and freedom of speech. The safety of the commune is above all. Rights come with responsibilities and reciprocal duties.
4.) And most importantly to start representing Europeans’ interests and stop the undemocratic unilateral acts that they do without the consent of the majority of European populations.

We fear for our way of life, for our children and for our future. Liberal Europe is rushing to a catastrophe in its current form. Last week nearly 150 people paid with their lives on the altar of a liberal Europe where anyone can do what they want without matching punishment. Don’t wait for the people to start electing far right parties that are an equal threat to our continent. If things go as now and our interests are not important to politicians Europeans will start voting in a way that Mr. Junckek and Frau Merkel certainly won’t like. Europe is at a very ugly turning point and we need firm leadership even if it costs “political correctness” in certain cases.

To stop the war and stop selling our Europe! We all know that our European Leaders and other People are winning from the War in Syria and the refugees, getting more richer and not caring neither about their people, nor the people, which homes had been destroyed and relatives, who had died during the war!
We – the normal people of Europe – we do not want to sell our country ot force to change!
We want peace and we want to live freely in a Christian Europe as European Citizens, as our forefathers and ancestors had!
For countries like France and the United Kingdom is different, because they had colonies all over Africa and Asia. And after the Second World War they called people from their ex/colonies to help them rebuilt their countries, like Germany did with Turkish people, and used them as second-hand people. But in countries as Hungary, Slovenia, Poland etc we hadn’t had such a chance. We rebulited our countries on our own after the two Wars. We never had colonies, because we were de facto colonies of Empires – the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary and the Russian Empire.
The United Kingdom, France and Germany had invited them into their countries, they should deal with them! Not the rest of Europe!
We do not force anyone to follow our traditions and force them to convert to Christianity and neither should they! If they want to follow their laws and their Religion – they can freely choose another country or continent.
The only Normal Parliaments in Europe are in Switzerland, Hungary, Poland and the other countries of the old Warszawa/Warsaw Pact!!!

How and why does Israel end up in three of the comments ? Oh, yeah, it’s Europe, that explains it, Since we cannot blame Jewish people anymore for the Plague or burn their Talmuds- (too obvious) We can just throw them under the bus in the code name (Israel) because that’s acceptable and even politically correct, even in a conversation about the same horrific slaughter that they have endured for years. Sad.

I would ask them why do they annually spend millions on passport controls and security at airports and at the same time literally allow anybody to land on the coasts of Europe and then wander at will across borderless nations. Is it any wonder the leaders of countries like the US,Russia and China look down on us with such contempt.

I would like to ask, when is Europe draw a line and defend the values that We, as a whole, defend? Values like freedom and tolerance but also of respect!

I would think that, instead of simply condoning or applying economical sanctions, it’s about time to raise the level of participation and sending troops to stop IS, once and for all, for all the crimes they commited against Europe and the rest of the World.

We cannot abide any more time in hope that our allies move so that We can act accordingly, this was done in Europe, against fellow europeans, so it’s Europe that must act!

For when European Armed Forces and Centralizes Security Agencies?

it’s only one sulotion nd i wonder why no one in this case do not go in with groundtroops when they were happy to do it in Afganistan and Iraq. but at that tme they had way to small forces. the only why to get pese in the region is to clear it from all arms. so sen in 59 million soilders and go from iraq to afganistan so clear ir from all arms by going thro the countries in a chang of peopel. so one in 100% shoore that their is no more hideout and at the same time irradicate all groups like IS.then have it postrould from an choosen president for some time before the first election. at the same time have it clear the politics from religon in that countries in a similar way sa turky.

I would ask our politicians to ask countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey to stop supporting and financing terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq, stop saying that Assad must go since it is the only reasonable man in that region, fight against Brotherhood and the Salafis and do not allow these organizations to enter into our countries and have a say in our politics. Finally, I would ask Europe to create a united Foreign ministry and Defence ministry for all member-states and get the EU out of NATO and stop following the crazy American policy in the Middle East.

SELF DEFEATING EU DEFENSE AGAINST TERRORISM?
Once again and unfortunately the EU governance design looks inadequate for the global challenges of our times and scenarios. It is totally a waste of time & energy for example that the aids to France ( not to Paris , sigh) were decided by the Council of the Ministries of Defense of the EU member states. It’s long , bureaucratic and slow as it implies bilateral, international agreements amoing the 28 member states which is an achronistic after theTreaty of Lisbon . The article 13 of the NEUT provides the Eu full legal capacity and the only bilateral agreemets should be bertween the EU and USA/Russia/China etc and not among the EU member states . If EU wants to be cooperative and competitive in the global scenarios it must adopt a supernational , functional and constructionist policy & governance model. An international and intergovernamental EU is self defeating against high speed global changes in business, technology, intelligence and politics .

EU leaders should protect the rights of EU citizens and not allow the flow of unidentifiable refugees, migrants and terrorists freely through the borders of Europe. Paris has proved that the integration process and the so called multi-culti does not work. We will suffer and our children will suffer because of the short-sightedness of today’s EU leadership. What kind of Union is this, individual countries can’t decide on accepting or rejecting migrants-refugees while, almost 50% of US states can declare that they will not accept Syrian refugees even against the will of the federal government ! What are we talking about here? Rules, regulations, laws for European citizens which will not and are not kept by the people rushing across Europe to the “safe haven” of Germany, Sweden etc. The powers that allow and help this are betraying the nation they represent and also the whole of Europe.

Stop selling armament to the bad guys. Stop all “collaboration” with those affiliated with these terrorists. Create a stronger, more united Europe. Focus on bringing Europe together. Hold on to our culture and our diversity. Our history is not something that should be forgotten. And treat the immigration problem with humanity, but also with precaution. I understand the refugee problem is time-sensitive, but this should not mean that civil conduct is no longer required. Make use of the law and if the law is not good enough, work on it. War is never the solution. I just hope our leaders have the wisdom to see it.

This is where the main problem is – why should we ASK someone we supposedly elected to work in out interest in a first place? They should be TOLD, not asked! Secondly, imagine yourself you take dcolleags result of which is your office burning down and half of your colleagues are dead or sent to hospital with severe burns, will you keep your job?!? Or you will be fired and also sent to court for trial?!

Why did French Parliament respond to aggression with aggression? Don’t they think that it’s showing that they aren’t better than those who were responsible for attacks in Paris?

I’m asking with full awarness of the fact that some kind of responce was necessary (due to the rules that determine relations in international community). But there are many ways to respond. Why was it aggression?

Rewrite the Koran for 21st century western life, removing all passages that advocate killing of non-muslims, gays, atheists, stoning, limb removing, beheading, FGM, etc. or anything that can be twisted by extremists. Allow only a modern western version to be taught in the west, deport imams who teach forbidden texts and close their mosques. Muslims who wish to stick to the old teachings should live in Islamic countries, those who are willing to adapt must follow the western version of Islam or leave the country. We have been tolerant of this medieval backward religion for far too long and must force it to modernise as other religions have done. We do not allow things like blood sacrifices to gods any more because it was once a religious practice so why do we tolerate ancient Islam? Why do we still allow these evil passages that advocate things that are abominations to the west? Sharia Law has no place in our civilisation. Make this the law and many will not wish to come. Of those who do they must adapt or leave the west.

Find out exactly who is providing the terrorists with the vast amounts of money needed to access their weapons. Then find out exactly who is providing them with their weapons.
That’s just for starters. I need to think more about this.

By all means, find out what banks account for their transactions (knowing the money’s provenience from drugs and human slavery) and provide the world with new laws about financing, banking and providing assistance to terrorists, murderers, criminals and tax evading kind of bastards!!!

    Junk-er should resign ASAP.
    Merkel too.

    Like yesterday.
    They failed.
    Their “policies” have failed.

And Juncker’s “declarations” have really started to sound like those of a person who has been too much in Amsterdam lately.

“Let’s be friends with Russia again” – even though they attack other countries and threaten half of the EU and have an attrocious record.

“Let’s get rid of NATO” – because clearly Europe can defend itself – 2 world wars where we couldn’t get our yard in order are “proof” enough of that.

And the latest “All EU countries are equal but some are more equal than others!”
( I am paraphrasing, but the idea of this “two speed Europe” that LONDON is pushing )

So, yeah, GOOD BYE Juncker, I for sure won’t miss your british ass-kissing face.

What happened before the “friendly” between Greece and Turkey should tell all Europeans the story we don’t want to hear. That’s right, soccer “fans” showed their European commitment and solidarity in an unmistakable way, leaders should take note because the “silence” was certainly broken.

Strengthen Europe’s external [[land][maritime]] borders. The focus of attention should be on Turkey – now, the biggest exporter of islam into Europe.

Greece has been sufficiently weakened economically and militarily, it cannot (defend) protect Europe alone!

The Greek-Islands, Islets and Rock-Peaks out of the Aegean-Sea mark Europe’s maritime border with Turkey – Europe need to defend and protect this border on continuous 24/7 basis…we have the technology, the manpower, and the financial clout to police European external borders – Do it Now!

1st- When will you really reinforce the EU’s external borders, controls and detailed checks? Additionally, and most importantly: 2nd- When will you put an end to that stupid Schengen area/agreement??? – instead of us having successive border checks and “extra layers” of security between European partners/countries, all we have is… a big mess! I’m sure that true Europeans wouldn’t mind to wait a little bit in a queue having a coffee or reading a newspaper, to have peace of mind and feel safer and secure within Europe… And anyway, let’s be honest about this: true Europeans (people with similar culture that share our deep rooted values, principles, way of life, society rules and even standards of behaviour, etc etc, regardless of spoken languages!) DON’T NEED the Schengen agreement… Schengen is only good for all sorts of Non-Europeans to abuse it, and move freely within Europe once they set foot in the first European country they can enter to play around… Schengen is only good for Non-Europeans from the rest of the world, really! The principle of its creation “between Europeans and for Europeans only” is completely lost, it’s useless.

At first the EU must defend its external borders, because many terrorists passed by them. The second the conflict in Syria should go to the end. The radical Islam preachers ought to be sentenced and send in the prison. And not at last, Europe should be Christian.

  82. avatar
    Samer Hadchity

Europe, for the time being, definetly must take political measures with the governments that financed and still financing those extremists. However the question here is: was it really a shock for EU countries what happenned in Paris? Did they really waited to see people dying on EU terrain to get how serious is the situation? All the immigrants crisis was not a sign? All the people who died and others who are dying now in middle east because of ISIS are not a motive to do something about it?…Why Europe didn’t consider the people that will die when they agreed on the war in Syria, or it doesn’t matter as long as they aren’t EU people?…
It’s fundamental that Europe in the beginning of any crisis to support the peaceful options and use political and economical measures and pressure instead of supporting wars. Violence will only lead to more violence, EU leaders must have the courage to be FAIR in their decisions when they interfere in other countries and consider any human being around the globe as an EU citizen. EU must stand for peace, this is the only way…

    We are humans too!

We also have the human rights to live safe and to work to sustain only our own needs. We don’t read minds nor have X-ray vision to have the possibility to avoid being killed by someone who has decided to kill people just because of hatred against different religion, different culture, different society. Many(not all) snakes are deadly poisonous, but we take precaution about all snakes, we don’t go close to check if that particular one is dangerous or not, we keep distance for PRECAUTION!

I’m very sorry for the children. But compassion and tolerance that harm ourselves, the life of our children, that put our life in dangerous??? This is stupidty, this is irresponsibility!!! Our first responsibility is for our own children!!! We are HUMANS too, we also have the human right to live safe, to protect ourselves, to protect our children(it’s even an obligation)!!! We have the human right to work to maintain only our own livelihood and enjoy our money from our work. We can’t afford to maintain millions of people forever, people who choose to live by making wars and-or children.

The adults must be responsible and care about all the disgraces they can create just by educating their children evilly. Those adults making wars today learned intolerance-hatred-violence with their own parents-people-culture who didn’t care about what they were teaching to their children who would grow up and could turn that hatred-violence-intolerance into ACTIONS like killing people.

We, workers-taxpayers, have been turn into slaves to pay for the irresponsability-hatred-violence of those who don’t take their responsabilities to work and build their lives and their countries.
During decades, UN-EU-USA have taken our taxes, turning workers-taxpayers into slaves, trying to convince arabs and africans to stop making wars and take responsibility to work and build their countries, without suceeding, instead, it has been even worse and worse since those people get more free energy and time to make more wars and children.
EU-USA-UN shouldn’t put the nose in other countries anymore, and they all should stop also giving any aid, send back all refugees and even their 2nd-3rd.-etc generations who are not satisfied in West.

This speech of Human Rights with no Human OBLIGATIONS created a culture of irresponsibility where the individual doesn’t care for the consequences of his-her choices and actions since they have learned to blame others, to blame the society and the government, the damn rich who chose to work hard, to have few children, to live in peace for working and building. EU and UN have spreaded the problems from disrupted regions(where they don’t stop producing conflicts and-or children) to destroy where already was built in a very good condition.

Humanity is not only solidarity, it’s not only rights, it’s obligations also, obligation to work, to be respectful and responsible for the consequences of your choices and actions, responsible for not letting your children learn intolerance-hatred-violence.

To demand people to commit with basic human obligations as work-responsability-respect in order to have aid would help themselves to learn and improve. They have had aid with no demands and this is not helping to end the problems, it is increasing year after year. Sometimes in life, the treatment that cures is very painful and then make people appreciate life better and learn to be more positive and constructive.

Firstly, what will Europe and its various leaders do to address in-country-grown radicalization of its young generation? Have national societies done enough to include migrants into their societies? If the answer to that is no, what will be done to change that? Secondly, will Europe finally take a serious look at how it can continue doing business with Saudi Arabia, but look the other way when it comes to that country’s support, if not even outright funding, of religious extremism? Can anyone really believe that the EU cannot have it both ways without having to take responsibility for its actions?

Why was Merkle allowed to simply tell all Syrians they could come to Germany? This ultimately affects all other European Countries, and yet there was no vote!
Once they arrive in Germany they are free to travel anywhere. The Schengen was for free movement within Europe, not for anyone who arrives at our door.
Yes I feel sorry for them, but when we have welcomed previous refugees, they have assimilated into our society, we now have so many people who have very strong views, which are not tolerant of others, and certainly do not fit in with our European culture. Close the boarders, Schengen is dead.

I absolutely agree with the post above from Doris, when I was a teacher for asylum teenagers, they were given free apartment, free food, free heating, etc etc, my parents had to put on another jumper, they threw open the windows, the certificates we gave them, they tore up, the more you give the more they take, and the less they appreciate.
